The Kitchen @ the Market is set to open in March at the Broadway Market

This is excellent news for the Broadway Market.

A new commercial kitchen is set to open next month at the Broadway Market.  It’s going to be used for culinary entrepreneurs. The “Kitchen @ the Market” will offer food production space and storage. The kitchen is 800 square feet. It has commercial stoves, ovens, freezers and prep space.

In a press release, the Broadway Market manager, Kathleen Peterson, said, “This is meant to bridge the gap for up and coming food producers who have outgrown their home kitchens, but aren’t ready to set up their own commercial kitchens. This kitchen will be a wonderful small business development tool because it will allow small food entrepreneurs to make their products in a licenses kitchen and sell to the public. It also gives us a new element for public programming on Saturdays, such as visiting chef demonstrations and healthy cooking demonstrations.”

The Westminster Economic Development Initiative (WEDI) was selected to operate the kitchen. The organization operates the successful West Side Bazaar in Buffalo. The Friends of the Broadway Market District and the City of Buffalo selected WEDI.

Funding for the project came from a $60,000, two-year grant that the Friends of the Broadway Market District secured in 2018 from the United Way of Buffalo & Erie County. The grant is from a partnership between the United Way and the General Mills Foundation to improve the food climate of Buffalo, from access, quality, and affordability, as well as employment, ownership, and entrepreneurship opportunities in communities.

Here is a WKBW video with more info on the kitchen.
