Jericho Road to receive $200,000 grant from the New York State Health Foundation

The Jericho Road Community Health Center is set to open in 2018 at 1021 Broadway. The building is right across from the Broadway Market on the Lombard Street side of the market. It is one of the largest buildings in the Broadway-Fillmore Business District. Renovation of the building has been going on for about a year now.

BFA received this press release from Jericho Road:

Jericho Road Community Health Center has been awarded $200,000 from the New York State Health Foundation to support startup operations at its new health center at 1021 Broadway, scheduled to open in 2018. The grant will support Jericho Road’s efforts to expand access to primary care on Buffalo’s East Side. The neighborhood surrounding 1021 Broadway is significantly underserved in terms of medical care and suffers from a shortage of doctors, nurses, and other medical providers. Multiple primary care clinics and other treatment facilities have closed in recent years, creating an acute deficiency in healthcare, particularly for low-income residents.

Jericho Road’s expansion is motivated by worrisome trends and health data in the target neighborhoods. Recent studies of available health care resources on the East Side show that the ratio of health care providers to residents in the four zip codes surrounding Jericho Road’s new facility (14204, 14208, 14211, and 14212) is significantly worse than national averages. (The federal government deems a health professional shortage as one provider for every 3,000 people.) It may take residents up to an hour by bus to get to the nearest source of safety net primary care. According to New York State Department of Health data, preventable hospital admissions for people of color in these neighborhoods are well above the New York State
average.

The awarded grant will provide operational support for the facility, which will open in phases starting in 2018. The organization will first launch an 8,500 square foot clinical space with one “pod,” which will house two medical providers in its first year. Concurrently, WNY Imaging will open a new imaging center on the same floor to service patients of the new health center. Future plans for the building include expanded community programs, behavioral health services, an on-site pharmacy, physical therapy space, and a fitness center. Additionally, the Western New York Human Services Collaborative – a consortium of 11 local human service providers – will utilize two floors of the building to provide local residents with easy access to multiple, interrelated services in one central location.

“This funding from the New York State Health Foundation will allow us to strengthen the primary care safety net that has been eroding on the city’s East Side,” says Magdalena Nichols, Jericho Road’s chief development officer. “We are grateful to all our investors, including the New York State Health Foundation and The John R. Oishei Foundation, for supporting our efforts to provide the basic human right of healthcare to people living in poverty, refugees, the homeless, and other underserved groups in the Broadway-Fillmore area.”
