The Broadway Market – A Market All Year Round

To think in just a few short weeks (21 days) we will be in the season of Lent and with that comes one of the busiest seasons at the Broadway Market. As a young girl I remember going to the Market on a weekly basis with my Dad and Brother. We would start at the Market to get the food we needed for the week before heading to the news stand on the corner of Fillmore and Broadway to look at the new comic books that might have come in.

Fast forward to 25 years later and I still enjoy going to the Market with my Dad not only during the Lent season (we normally go on Good Friday), but we stop in from time to time throughout the year. I always like walking around the whole venue when I’m there, but there are a couple places I always have to stop at and they are:

  • MAZUREKS BAKERY Hours: Monday – Saturday 8:00 am – 4:00 pm
  • LUPAS MEATS (716) 892-4809 Hours: Monday – Saturday  8:00 am – 5:00 pm
  • POTTS DELI Hours: Wednesday – Saturday  8:00 am – 3:00 pm
  • GRIDLOCK LACQUER Saturdays

I’d love to hear from you, what are some of your favorite memories of the Broadway Market and what are some of your favorite or must go to places when you pay a visit there?

  1. I grew up on Broadway, (Club Romway),throughout the 60’s & 70’s. I often went on Saturdays with my Ma, to the Market. Take a number @ Redlinski’s or Roesch meat stands; kielbasa, city chicken, perogi. The interior kiosks-the Rye bread aroma, hard rolls, another old lady-had a small pickle stand-the best! For penny, I’d get on that huge scale & weigh myself. Outside, the egg farmer-Lewandowski-all of six teeth. He & my Ma would yell @ each other in Polish about the size of the eggs…& overpriced @ 15cents/dozen!He’d call her a witch, she’d call him a thief! They’d compromise @ 13 cents, shake hands, & wish each other well till next week! Then the chicken/duck slaughterhouse, across the street. Wooden floors, feathers all over the place. I couldn’t watch, but the chicken couldn’t be fresher! Then to the coffee shop inside the mall-milk shake for me; sometimes Marco’s pizzeria near the Broadway entrance; final stop, Burczynski’s bakery. If my Ma had the 25 & 15 cent fares for the bus, ok, if not, we walked with the shopping bags & pull cart, stop @ the milk machine @ Schmarbeck st.25 cents/quart, then bring the groceries home. My Ma & I then went downstairs @ Club Romway-our landlady & my Ma would have a few beers & smokes, while I had a roast beef on weck or cheeseburger with an RC or Pepsi. Off to 44 playground to see my buddies.A great day in the old neighborhood!
