Interview: Ty Reynolds of Mazurek’s Bakery on opening in the Broadway Market

Mazurek’s Bakery, located at 543 South Park Avenue and established in 1933, is a First Ward treasure. The last of the Mazureks retired in 2012, but Ty Reynolds and Nick Smith took over the business and kept the rolling pins rolling. Fast forward to 2015, and Mazurek’s Bakery is expanding into the Broadway Market as a permanent vendor.

After hearing the news a few weeks ago, I reached out to the bakery for an interview on their decision to open up inside of the Broadway Market. Ty Reynolds was gracious enough to respond, and here is the interview.

What made you decide to open a stand in the Broadway Market?

For the past few years we provided Melanie Sweets Unlimited with some of our baked goods, which has allowed us to have a good understanding of the customers: what they’re looking for, along with the volume of customers throughout the year. We realized with Melanie Sweets Unlimited leaving the market it has left a void for some customers which we believe Mazurek’s Bakery would be a great fit for the space and customers within the Broadway Market. Mazurek’s Bakery first opened in 1933 in the Old First Ward, opening this second location will allow for us to expand the bakery, into the polish community, since we’re a polish focused bakery.

How much of your product line will you be bringing to the Market?

Currently the bakery doesn’t have a set list of items that we will selling per say. We will have our standard items: pastry hearts, turnovers, poppy seed & almond logs, placzek’s, polish cheesecakes, chrusciki, decorated cakes, small and large cookies, and many more items. We have yet to determine which days we will have our famous rye bread. New items for the bakery we will be offering Crystal Beach candy: suckers, sugar waffles, and some candy bars. We’re open to suggestions of new items to start making specialty for the Broadway Market.

What are your impressions of the Broadway Market?

The Broadway Market is an exciting place to visit and shop at. Many people make the journey around the Easter Holiday and it would be great to see people visiting the Broadway Market year round, as the Market always has many different events going taking place for customers. With the Broadway Market holding more special events, we’re hopeful we will see more visitors and not a once a year destination for many.

When are you looking to open?

The bakery is planning to open the week of November 16th, we are currently in the process of getting the final permits required to open, this is a guarantee date, and we will open as soon as we’re possible too.

Anything else you would like to add?

As we open, we would love to hear from the community the items they would like to see us make an offer. We’re always open to suggestions and recommendations, we will take them all into consideration.
