And this is why the Central Terminal is important

Late yesterday I clicked into a photo posted on the Central Terminal’s Facebook page by Ray Kasprzyk, It’s a photo of a picture his five-year-old nephew drew of the building. The first thought to pop into me head was this, “This is why the Terminal is important.”

Since 1929, the Central Terminal has stood tall and proud in the heart of the Broadway-Fillmore neighborhood. This massive structure is the biggest building in Buffalo outside of downtown. We all know the history. The Terminal fell on hard times in the latter part of the 20th century. The building was stripped of a lot of its Art Deco decor inside. And it was eventually purchased by the Central Terminal Restoration Corporation (CTRC) in the late 1990s. The CTRC has done a remarkable job as caretakers of building. They have done a lot of work cleaning it up, protecting it, and opening the place back up to the public.

And though the Terminal isn’t in perfect shape, it continues to inspire. Proof positive is this five-year-old’s picture of the building. What the Central Terminal has done for generations is capture the imagination of those who seen it and felt it inside of themselves. That is why it is important. That is why it is important that everything must been done to continue the efforts to restore this Buffalo treasure back to it original greatness. The building is that important.

  1. My grandchildren are also fascinated with the terminal so the building continues to inspire. After seeing how they restored the Union Station in Washington DC it became evident to me that ours is a far more interesting facility with so much potential. The trains still pass through and they should be stopping there. The two local train stations are a poor example of what Buffalo is, was and will be. They talk about a rapid transit line, what better place? This building and the location has so much potential. We should have a raffle dedicated to the restoration of the station. Locals would buy it in place of the NYS lottery where you waste your money most of the time. The people want this building restored!!!!

  2. There is some thought on moving the Headquarters of the Buffalo Police and Buffalo Fire Departments from downtown to the east side. Is the terminal being considered??? It should be: lots of space to be renovated, centrally located, lots of parking, historical funding available. What’s not to like???
