Art Exhibition – Out of Darkness: Putting a Face on Homelessness

Out of the Darkness

This exhibition at Artspace Buffalo of portraits by Gary Wolfe represents a two year collaboration between the the artist, and the Lt. Matt Urban Center’s homeless services department, the Hope Center, and a partnership with the Restoration Society’s Harbor House.

The work seeks to raise public awareness around the issue of homelessness in the City of Buffalo by literally putting faces of real persons on this chronic community concern.

Each portrait is painted on tar paper in oil and encaustic and represents a person who has been or is now chronically homeless in City of Buffalo.

Each model was interviewed and has provided a quote to go along with her or his portrait. Models were paid a sitting fee.

Thirty percent of all sales will go to the Hope Center toward the Hope Gardens, a 12 unit residency for chronically homeless women that is currently being constructed on the East Side of Buffalo.

The exhibit runs from August 2 through the August 30.
