There are times when I am reminded that what I do here on BFA is important. To be honest, working…helping places in neighborhood is rarely easy…it’s a time consuming and energy consuming endeavor. But it is important.

When I was asked to photograph the pictures in the video above, I didn’t know what to expect. I knew that most of what was stored in the cross of south tower of Corpus Christi when it was built was in bad shape. Seeing it and getting the sense of how important it was to the people who placed it there was profound.

Here I was…102 years later…documenting the history of Corpus Christi much like the people who put their items in the cross. These people are part of me as much as I am part of them. The neighborhood has changed along with the faces at Corpus Christi, but the ties that bind us are still the same. Corpus Christi and other places in the neighborhood have stood for over a century as beacons of hope and inspiration for countless people. They helped shape the neighborhood and its people. They continue to inspire and bring hope for better days. They are important.

Corpus Christi is not only a tribute to B-F’s past, but a tribute to its future. As long as there are people like me and you, the neighborhood will survive.

Alive!

  1. Thank you for sharing this. It’s a shame that the material in the tower cross wasn’t better preserved. Is the church thinking about placing new items in the cross when it goes back up?
