Adam Mickiewicz Library & Dramatic Circle Announces Musical Acts for Dyngus Day 2010

Polish music with “The Polish Aires” featuring Greg Docenko with Matt Kantor will be on tap this Dyngus Day, Monday, April 5, 2010, at the Adam Mickiewicz Library & Dramtic Circle, 612 Fillmore Ave., at Paderewski Drive, between Broadway and William Street in Buffalo. Doors open at 5:00 pm and the Polkas start at 6pm. At 10:30 pm, Fritz’s Polka Band will close out the night with a variety of tunes.

The Adam Mickiewicz Hall likes to boast that it has Buffalo’s most authentic Dyngus Day celebration. Included in the array of the Dyngus Day activities scheduled by the Adam Mickiewicz Club will be Buffalo’s best complimentary Polish Sausage buffet.

Dyngus Day is an age-old holiday brought over from Poland where it is called “Wet Monday”. Dyngus Day began as a celebration of the end of Lenten limitations on certain foods and dancing. The beginning of spring and the courting season are also welcomed with the abundant use of water and pussy willows. The variety of music, the complimentary Fresh and Smoked Polish sausage buffet, as well as the wide selection of Polish Beers, and Liquors make the party at the Adam Mickiewicz Hall a truly unique and most authentic celebration. It was also one of the last locations in the old Polonia to throw a Dyngus Day party when Chopin’s Singing Society moved it’s clubrooms to the suburbs.

The Adam Mickiewicz Hall is located at 612 Fillmore Ave. (between Broadway and William, one block south of the Broadway Market). Admission to the party is $10. A small fee will be charged to those who have attended other Dyngus Day events. Plenty of secure parking will be available. Those attending are encouraged to bring only small squirt guns and pussy willows.

New to this year’s schedule is the addition of Fritz’s Polka Band from Verona, NY, and is are the Jagermeister sponsored, Fritz’s Polka Band (FPB) was formed in 1978 by lead accordionist, the late Fred Scherz Sr., and his eight-year old son, Fritz, for whom the band was named. Sadly, Fred passed away on November 14, 2009, but Fritz is going to try to keep FPB going. FPB performs an eclectic mix of musical styles, including modern polka, country, fox-trot, waltz, and more! Fritz’s Polka Band is NOT an oompa pa band or the stereotypical “polka” band. In fact, FPB is known for breaking the stereotype regarding “polka” music. FPB is the first polka band to perform at a Woodstock Festival!

Fritz’s Polka Band has made 17 recordings, which have achieved international airplay. Individuals of the band, and the band itself, have received some prestigious honors. As a group, FPB has performed on stage with “Canada’s Polka King,” Walter Ostanek (Grammy winner), “America’s Polka King,” the late Frank Yankovic (Grammy winner), LynnMarie Rink (Grammy nominee), and Glen Burtnik. Individually, Fritz has performed on-stage with Steve Augeri (former lead singer of Journey). FPB even appears on “The Manchurian Candidate” DVD, from Paramount Pictures! Additionally, Fritz’s Polka Band has opened up shows for Walt Ostanek, the late Frank Yankovic, Jimmy Sturr (Grammy winner), and BeauSoleil (Grammy winner). FPB has played at: Woodstock ’99, the New York State Fair, regional and county fairs, ethnic events, colleges, concerts, social occasions, corporate events, weddings, anniversaries, and benefits. They will be polkaing away starting at 10:30pm until 1am.
