Back in 1981, I had my 8th grade dinner with the rest of my graduating class from Saint John Kanty School at 80 Ashley Street.

Last week, Corpus Christi friend Andy Golebiowski sent me a link to an E-Bay auction for a 5 cent token from M. V. Pajakowski’s gin mill at 80 Ashley Street…of course I had to buy it and I did.

It never ceases to amaze me in a sad sort of way how quickly the neighborhood deteriorated.  Buildings like Pajakowski’s are lost causes…what a shame and how very sad that each and every day buildings like this move closer to meeting the wrecking ball all over Buffalo.

  1. Spent my first Dyngus Day with my husband Edwin and his parents at this place. Being Italian and growing up in the burbs, I had never experienced walking into a bar and everyone knowing everyone. It was quite the experince for me.

  2. I am shocked at the the gross deteriorization of the historic Polonia area. I had not sen it for a long while and it was shocking to see it. I fear the handwriting is on the wall.

  3. I lived on Mohr street during my first 13 years and still remember trick-or-treating in this place…as we went in, all the guys at the bar obviously had no candy on them, so they would toss coins into our bags….definitely great memories….

  4. Matt Pajakowski was my Dad’s first cousin. As we understood it back in South Bend, In., the bar prospered for years , even after Matt’s death in 1941. Can anyone fill me in at bit more?

  5. Matt Pajakowski was my maternal Grandfather and my aunt continued the business at 80 Ashley for many years into the 1980s. Many family memories came from that address. I’ve never seen one of the coins. There are mechanical pencils that are still floating around but no coins…I WOULD LOVE TO GET MY HANDS ON ONE! Please Help!!!
