Early this morning I received word that Michele Johnson tragically and suddenly lost her son James.

Once funeral arrangements are made, I will post here.

Her and her family have our condolences…keep them in your prayers.

  1. This is a small world. My intern was James supervisor at Bocces, and together with her fellow workers have been sharing stories about their dear friend. It is always a loss to loose someone so young, but yet left such a positive impact on others. I wish I had the opportunity to have known James.

James Wendell Johnson, 24, restaurant worker, devoted friend

    Dec. 29, 1984 — Jan. 11, 2009

Maybe it was the smile. Or maybe it was the spirit, fun and genuine goodness he seemed to exude.

Whatever it was, James Wendell Johnson had a ton of friends. And that’s why his unexpected death Sunday at age 24 left all of them in a state of disbelief.

“I’ve never known anyone like him,” said Mike Wojcik of the Town of Tonawanda, a longtime friend. “He had nothing but love in his heart.”

Mr. Johnson, the son of local housing activist Michele Johnson, died Sunday after suffering a seizure while working at the Pearl Street Grill and Brewery in Buffalo.

Born and raised in Buffalo, Mr. Johnson attended Bennett High School and later worked at Pearl Street and Bocce’s Pizza. He loved music, movies, computers and video games.

“I’ll love him forever,” said Nicole Christensen, his girlfriend. “He’s the most beautiful person I ever knew. His smile always made me laugh.”

Mr. Johnson’s legacy is his family and friends, each one of them devastated by the loss of a young man so many had grown to cherish.

“I was blessed to have him,” said his mother. “He was so full of life, so full of spirit.”

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his father, Wendell; a brother, Tony; and two sisters, Cassie and Destiny.

Services will be at 11 a. m. Saturday in Amigone Funeral Home, 2600 Sheridan Drive, Town of Tonawanda.

  2. Please note that the wake will be held from 2-4pm and 7-9pm at Amigone on 1132 Delaware (near W. Ferry) NOT Sheridan Drive and the funeral will be held at the same location, but at 10am NOT 11am.
